Maricio Antonio Diaz Mendez, 24, participates in a Bible study at Casa Hogar, a rehabilitation home for alcohol and drug addicts, outside of Antigua, Guatemala. Mendez has heavily been abusing drugs and alcohol when he decided to seek treatment. "I had to," he says, "I had no other option."..Casa Hogar currently houses 44 men (with a maximum of 60.) Jorge Rosales, himself a former drug user, founded the home 2 years ago after he kicked his habit and left the garbage dump he had been living in for thirteen months...If accepted into Casa Hogar the voluntary residents must first spend 6 days in a first floor room of mattresses, are denied showers and must eat meals separately from other residents. Patients in the first floor zone suffer from convulsions, vomiting and other withdrawal symptoms and are monitored round the clock by a nurse. Most alcoholics who enter the program have been drinking rubbing alcohol, according to Rosales, because it is so inexpensive..."If they make it" says resident Byron Rosales, "they can join us up top." It is up to the individual when they feel they are ready to leave the home.
